The Magic of Fostering a Dog

Being fostered is a wonderful opportunity for a dog to prepare for his forever home. He will have more one-on-one time with humans, and he can experience more of the world around him instead of being limited to the confines of a shelter. It can significantly increase his chances of fitting in with his next family.

And of course, his foster parents can make sure his new family is the right fit by helping them to understand his energy level, any issues that are being worked on, and any special needs the dog has.

Fostering isn't just good for the dog – it can do wonders for the human as well! A dog needs daily exercise, and that helps us to get up, get out of the house, and experience simplicity. Dogs help you to appreciate the world around you. They smell the ground so intensely. They look at the trees as though they are seeing them for the first time. It helps us to remember the wonders that we take for granted. So if you're stressed or anxious, it goes away for that moment when it's just you and the dog. People say I do magic, but it's the dogs that do magic. In an instant, they can help you feel calm. They just come in and make it happen without a word.

But I think it's important that you don't form too much of an emotional attachment with the dog. Remember, you are preparing the dog to detach himself from you and live with another human. If not, it can be damaging to his relationship with his new family. He can move on, but it will just make it harder for him. The way I think this can be achieved is by switching dogs. They use this system to train dogs for the blind. If people stay with a dog for a month and then get a new one, the dog doesn't become confused. When he is in his forever home, he will know he is with his new pack! As a professional, I have to do this with dogs I work with. If I am going to help a dog that is not mine, I can't connect all the way. I need to let the owners finish it!

Stay calm and assertive!

There are many ways to make a difference with the dogs we support.  Volunteer today and get involved!  You will be glad you did!!

The Fostering Commitment

Everyone involved in animal rescue is making a commitment to that animal. Dachshund Rescue of Bucks County is committed to the search for an appropriate, suitable, loving and permanent home for each dog. We are committed to their heath and well-being.

Our Fosters make a huge commitment as well. We also ask that our adopters commit to the dog they adopt for life. It is often a, seemingly, thankless task.

We are all volunteers who frequently have trouble comprehending why humans behave the way they do sometimes, especially when it comes to the way they treat or regard animals. It can be frustrating, time consuming, exasperating, enraging, exhausting and all consuming. Many times the only thanks lay in our successes.

For every dog that would have otherwise met with an unthinkable fate, we have our entire volunteer staff to thank for the successful outcome.

We regard you, our foster families, very seriously and with much gratitude. We respect and appreciate your commitment. Fostering is not a decision to be made lightly. Fostering is not a means by which one gets to try out various dogs in search of the right companion dog for ones self.  That said special consideration is always given to foster requested adoptions.

Remember, aside from our sincere gratitude, each fostered dogs’ love and trust, and ultimately, placement in their forever home, it may be the only thanks you know.

Saying good-bye will sometimes be very difficult and sometimes a welcome relief. In either case, the sense of reward and accomplishment you experience will have been well earned and incredibly worthwhile.

Foster Program Guidelines

Foster care at DRBC can be rewarding and is an incredibly benevolent. Please review the following guidelines carefully in addition to the Foster Agreement you will be asked to sign. Fostering parents and families form the backbone of the work we do.

We cannot exist as a rescue if people are not willing to bring needy animals into their homes while we search and screen for permanent homes for them.

Fosters have our undying gratitude and deepest respect and admiration. There are never enough foster homes to go around, and each is precious to DRBC and the animals we are trying to save.

Take the DRBC Foster Care Pledge

“This dog could have been mine.  I understand that through no fault of their own, some dogs enter into families that can’t care for them now or in their past.  This dog looks to good people to keep them, their littermates, their breed and their species well cared for and safe.  Dogs in foster care deserve to live in a stable and caring home with support from people that can love them and help them become the very best dog they can be.  They should not have to experience multiple homes while in foster care.  They will be treated no differently than the dogs that already live with them in their foster environment.  They should receive the best in diet and medical care, the most supportive and kind training and receive protection from harm and neglect.  Most of all, they should have the right to just be a dog.  I pledge to do whatever I can, in my own way, to fight for their rights while they are in my charge.”

I am making a difference.  I am a DRBC Foster Care Home.
